Pakistan has continued to experience significant restrictions on social media platforms including facebook, amid escalating political tensions and protests. The disruptions are the part of government strategy to control the flow of information during intense periods like protest, elections etc.
The restrictions begun earlier this year, Primarily effecting the platform X (formerly twitter), facebook, youtube and instagram. They were then intensified around the general elections and subsequent protests, which were marked by allegations of vote manipulation and election fraud. The government has cited security concerns as a reason for these disruptions, especially in the wake of violent incidents and terrorist attacks.
Digital rights activists and organizations have condemned these actions calling them as violation of civil liberties and freedom of expression. They argue such action can hinder public access to information and impede political participation. Activists also highlighted the problematic use of internet shutdowns during critical moments, which they claim as a tactic to suppress and control the narrative.
In response many Pakistanis have moved to use VPN’s to bypass the restrictions and access social media. However there are reports that government is also planning to ban VPNS, which would further limit online freedom and privacy.
The ongoing restrictions and the government's approach to internet and social media censorship have sparked widespread criticism from both local and international observers. They call for more transparent and democratic measures to address security and political issues rather than resorting to blanket bans and shutdowns that infringe on fundamental rights
