MOGADISHU - In a devastating setback to terror activities, Somali National Army (SNA) soldiers killed 50 Al-Shabaab militants in intense fighting on Saturday along the crucial border of Hiiraan and Middle Shabelle regions.
According to Ministry of Defense reports, the violence escalated after a disastrous al-Shabaab raid on an SNA military camp. Government soldiers, aided by local community defense forces, not only drove back the attack but pursued the retreating militants, inflicting many casualties.
"The Khawarij enemy attempted to launch an attack against the local allied forces and army but were repelled and defeated," the Defence Ministry spokesman Abukar Mohamed said. "We confirm 30 dead bodies in forest areas where the battle occurred and another 20 who were earlier killed."
The battlefield victory was during battles in several contested positions including Muqliga Ali, El-Hareeri, Hareeri Madoobe, and Garas Magan - regions where there is increased military activities in recent weeks.
The operation is described as one of the most severe defeats for Al-Shabaab in recent times, part of increased government offensives within central Somalia.
Community Defense Partnership
The victory highlights the success of Somalia's evolving security strategy, which increasingly relies on coordination between professional military forces and local Ma'awisley combatants drawn from communities hardest hit by terrorist brutality.
"What we're seeing is the power of unity between national forces and local fighters who know the terrain and have personal stakes in defending these communities," said a senior security official. "This partner strategy is removing Al-Shabaab's ability to roam freely in these regions."
The Ma'awisley fighters, named after the traditional sarongs they wear, have become an important force multiplier for government operations, providing critical intelligence and local knowledge that helps enhance operational effectiveness.
Strategic Importance
The Hiiraan-Middle Shabelle border area is a vital terrain in the war against terrorism in Somalia. It has served as Al-Shabaab's transit route from and to their bases and has been targeted in intensive coordinated offensives by SNA and its partners for the past few months.
"This area is of strategic importance to the overall effort to gain ground in areas from these terrorists," a military commander, speaking on background due to security issues regarding operations, said. "Each successful operation like this one further reduces their ability and brings Somalia closer to regaining full government control."
Security officials confirmed that operations will continue throughout the entire region as part of Somalia's overall initiative to neutralize terrorist threats and stabilize areas long been afflicted by extremist terrorism.
The government has urged citizens to remain vigilant and continue supporting security forces as they work to dismantle remaining Al-Shabaab networks and protect civilian populations from terrorist attacks.
With military pressure building on multiple fronts, the successful defense mission on Saturday is a demonstration of Somalia's growing capacity to defeat terrorist attacks and build a safer future for its citizens.
