In a historic development, Pakistan and Turkiye have signed 24 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) to enhance trade, economic, and defense cooperation between the two countries.¹ The MoUs were signed at the seventh session of the High-Level Strategic Cooperation Council in Islamabad, where Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif were present.
The signing of these MoUs is a major achievement in the bilateral relations between Pakistan and Turkiye. The MoUs span across various sectors, such as defense, energy, trade, and technology, and are likely to enhance cooperation between the two nations.² Among the major agreements signed was a statement to further enhance strategic ties between Pakistan and Turkiye.
Besides the joint declaration, a number of significant agreements were inked, including an MoU for reciprocal exchange of military and civilian personnel on a socio-cultural basis.³ This should strengthen people-to-people relations between the two countries as well as deepen defense and security cooperation.
The accords that have been entered into between Turkiye and Pakistan are bound to positively affect two-way trade between the two nations. Officials say that two-way trade between Turkiye and Pakistan was $543.4 million in 2023-24, and the target is to raise it to $5 billion in the next few years.
To fulfill this objective, the two nations have decided to increase trade and industrial cooperation. A business forum has been formed to enhance economic relations between Turkiye and Pakistan, and some agreements have been signed to facilitate cooperation in trade, investment, and industry.
By and large, the 24 MoUs signed by Pakistan and Turkiye represent an important milestone for the bilateral relation between the two nations. The deals are predicted to facilitate collaboration across a host of sectors as well as develop strong relations between the two countries
