Israel’s interception of Gaza flotilla draws global ire as Pakistan demands release of detained activists

Pakistan and several other  countries  on Thursday condemned Israel’s “dastardly attack” on the  Global Sumud Flotilla  (GSF) after its forces intercepted the flotilla heading to break Israel’s siege of Gaza and deliver aid. Israeli forces  began intercepting  the flotilla’s latest bid to reach Gaza late last night, the fleet said. Israel has so far intercepted 39 boats with foreign activists on board to Gaza, leaving only one vessel still sailing towards the Palestinian enclave, the flotilla organisers said today. The 45-vessel flotilla, with activists and politicians including  Greta Thunberg  on board, left Spain last month to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, where the United Nations has warned of famine. Former Pakistani senator  Mushtaq Ahmad Khan  was also on board. Hours after Tel Aviv’s move drew global condemnation, Israeli foreign ministry posted on X that all on board the flotilla were safe would be “deported to Europe”...

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia Strengthen Economic Ties with $1.61 Billion Deals

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia took a huge leap forward on Monday in the economic cooperation area by signing two major agreements valued at $1.61 billion. The agreements include a concessional credit agreement and an oil import financing facility, which would help boost the economic resilience of Pakistan and also strengthen its relations with Saudi Arabia.

Under this concessional credit agreement worth $41 million, a gravity-flow water scheme would be constructed in Mansehra to provide pure drinking water to more than 150,000 locals. It will not only improve public health but also increase the quality of life for people in Mansehra. The prime minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif, attended the signing ceremony and welcomed the deal while showing his gratitude to Saudi Arabia for its continued support.

The oil import financing facility with a value of $1.20 billion will offer Pakistan one year of deferred payment for imported oil from Saudi Arabia. The deal will help reduce the reliance of expensive oil imports in Pakistan and its impact on fluctuations in the global price. It will also improve the economic resilience of Pakistan and increase its economy's much-needed strength.

The signing of these agreements would depict the sound, long-standing, and never-ending relationship of Pakistan with Saudi Arabia. For ages, two have been very cooperative. All these deals are going to augment economic ties among these two nations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with CEO of Saudi Fund for Development, Sultan Abdulrahman Al-Marshad, witnessed this ceremony which was attended by many more high officials also.

Agreements are expected to have a positive impact on the economy of Pakistan, especially concerning water management and energy security. For example, the Gravity Flow Water Supply Scheme will provide pure drinking water to the locals and improve public health and quality of life. In the same manner, the oil import financing facility will reduce reliance on expensive oil imports and also reduce the shocks of global price fluctuations.

In conclusion, the signing of these landmark agreements marks a significant step forward in Pakistan-Saudi Arabia economic cooperation. As both countries continue to work together to promote economic development and regional stability, their partnership is likely to yield rich dividends for the people of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.
