UN Recognizes Humanitarian Efforts of UAE in Sudan

The United Nations has formally acknowledged the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for its extensive humanitarian efforts in Sudan, highlighting the Emirates' critical role in addressing the ongoing crisis. This recognition follows the UAE's recent announcement of a $70 million aid package dedicated to various UN agencies operating in Sudan.

The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs disclosed that this significant aid will be allocated to the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the World Food Programme (WFP), the High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), and the World Health Organisation (WHO). These funds are aimed at providing a holistic approach to the crisis, focusing on essential food and health services, protecting women and children, and ensuring livelihoods and shelter in emergency situations.

Reem Al Hashimy, Minister of State for International Cooperation, emphasized the importance of this aid, noting that it would support areas including Al Fasher. She underscored the UAE's unwavering commitment to supporting the Sudanese people, reflecting the broader ethos of the Emirates in addressing global humanitarian challenges and offering assistance to those in dire need.

Since the conflict began in Sudan, the UAE has been proactive in establishing humanitarian corridors with neighboring South Sudan and Chad, which have sheltered thousands of refugees. To date, the UAE has provided $130 million in aid, transported 9,500 tonnes of food and medical supplies via 148 relief flights, and dispatched a ship carrying 1,000 tonnes of urgent relief supplies.

The UAE's efforts extend beyond immediate aid; it has also constructed two field hospitals in Amdgrass and Abeche, Chad, which have treated over 29,000 patients. These hospitals offer services to all civilians, regardless of nationality, age, gender, or political affiliation. Additionally, the UAE has sent a plane with 100 tonnes of food aid to support Sudanese refugees in South Sudan through the WFP.

The UN's recognition of the UAE's humanitarian efforts highlights the global community's appreciation for the Emirates' proactive and generous support. Ms. Al Hashimy reiterated the UAE's call for an immediate and permanent ceasefire and continuous efforts to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis in Sudan, reaffirming the UAE's enduring commitment to peace and humanitarian aid.
