Karachi - Hafiz Naeemur Rehman has been elected as the new Emir (chief) of Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) following party elections held on Thursday.
Rehman secured a majority of votes to succeed Sirajul Haq, who had stepped down from the top post in February after JI's dismal performance in the recent general elections.
The JI could not win any National Assembly seat and secured only two provincial assembly seats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Haq had led the party for 10 years since 2014.
According to JI spokesperson, over 82% of the total party workers participated in the election process to choose the new Emir.
Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, who previously served as JI Secretary General, will hold the top office for the next five years till 2029.
JI follows a democratic and electoral process to elect its chief every five years. Over 31,000 senior party workers are eligible to vote.
The election of a new leader aims to revive the JI's political fortunes following its recent defeats. Under Rehman's leadership, the party will aim to reorganize its ranks and devise new strategies.
Rehman faces the challenging task of leading JI's ideological movement and regaining lost political ground at a time when religion-based parties are struggling to make an impact.
The new Emir is expected to play an active role in raising public issues and present the JI's vision as an alternative to mainstream political forces.
