The Torkham border crossing between Pakistan and Afghanistan witnessed a disturbing incident on Sunday, resulting in six members of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) being injured during an altercation with Pakistani border guards. The clash led to the closure of the border crossing for over four hours, causing inconvenience to travelers and trade activities.
Both the FIA and Frontier Corps have provided conflicting accounts of the incident, each accusing the other of malpractice and interference in their official responsibilities. According to the immigration staff, including one of the injured, the border guards allegedly pressured them to allow an Afghan national to cross the border without undergoing necessary immigration formalities. The immigration staff claimed that the Afghan individual possessed a fake travel document.
The situation escalated when security personnel allegedly assaulted the FIA officer who refused to allow the Afghan national to cross. Subsequently, a group of security personnel armed with rifles and batons entered the FIA premises, beating up their staff members and causing injuries to six of them. Disturbing video footage shared on social media captured the security personnel beating FIA staff with sticks, while the injured could be heard screaming in pain.
The incident not only affected the FIA staff but also caused panic among laborers, porters, and Afghan nationals, including women and children, who were present at the scene. They could be seen running for safety in the midst of the chaos.
The injured FIA staff members have been identified as Arif, Amjad, Zulfiqar, Mehmud, Anbar Shah, and Herpal Singh. Three of the injured were taken to the District Headquarters Hospital in Landi Kotal, while the remaining three were initially detained by security forces but were later handed over to FIA officials. One of the injured personnel was transferred to Peshawar for further medical treatment.
On the other hand, the Frontier Corps issued a statement accusing the FIA staff of allowing Afghan nationals to enter Pakistan without valid travel documents after accepting bribes. The statement highlighted a recent incident in which two Afghan nationals were cleared by FIA immigration staff without proper documentation. The Frontier Corps claimed that this led to the arrest of the illegal Afghan nationals by security forces, resulting in tensions between the agencies.
Efforts to resolve the situation and prevent such incidents in the future were undertaken through a series of meetings between the Frontier Corps and FIA officials. Investigations have been initiated to determine the actual cause of the clash, and measures will be taken to ensure a smooth immigration process and prevent illegal border crossings.
The reopening of the Torkham border crossing around midday provided relief to travelers and trade activities that had been disrupted due to the incident.
It is crucial for border officials to maintain professionalism and adhere to standard operating procedures to ensure the safety of both staff members and individuals crossing the border. Such incidents highlight the need for effective coordination and cooperation between different agencies involved in border control to maintain secure and efficient border crossings.
As the investigations continue, it is hoped that lessons will be learned, and necessary measures will be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future, promoting peace and harmony at the Torkham border crossing.
