Islamabad - In a major embarrassment for Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), one of its air hostesses has been arrested by the Canadian authorities for carrying multiple passports not belonging to her.
Hina Sani, a flight attendant with PIA, was held after she landed in Toronto, Canada on March 29 via Pakistan International Airlines flight PK-789 from Pakistan. According to sources, during the immigration clearance at the Toronto airport, the Canadian authorities found multiple passports from Hina Sani's baggage that belonged to different individuals other than her.
Confirming the incident, a PIA spokesperson said air hostess Hina Sani has been arrested by the Canadian police for carrying someone else's passports. It is believed that Sani is related to a famous Pakistani singer but the identity of the singer has not been disclosed.
Sources privy to the matter revealed that seven other flight attendants who were traveling with Hina Sani on the same aircraft to Toronto have been barred from flying to Canada by PIA. It is alleged that the arrested air hostess was given special permission to travel by senior PIA officials using her ID, which violates the set regulations.
The incident raises serious questions on the procedures followed and how someone can carry others' passports without proper verification. Two other cabin crew members who were part of the same flight crew were questioned by the Canadian authorities but were later released after initial questioning.
Holding or traveling on someone else's passport is considered a serious criminal offense under international aviation laws. This is the latest case bringing PIA's integrity into question after two staffers working on an international flight sneaked away in Canada last month. The national airline is already struggling with financial troubles and such violations further tarnish its reputation. An internal investigation has reportedly been launched by PIA to ascertain the facts.
