The UAE’s Strategic Shift: Why the Pivot to Asia Is a Survival Necessity

The geopolitical landscape of the Middle East is shifting beneath our feet. While the world watches the friction of the U.S.-Iran conflict, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is quietly-and brilliantly rewriting its economic destiny. It’s no longer just about being a bridge between East and West; the U AE is fundamentally deciding that its future lies in the East. Navigating Beyond the Shadow of Regional Conflict In my view, the UAE’s recent distancing from traditional blocs like OPEC and the GCC isn't just a policy change; it’s a masterclass in strategic autonomy. For decades, the Gulf states have been viewed through the lens of Western dependency. However, the recent waves of drone and missile threats have proven that the UAE can no longer afford to be a bystander in a -dangerous neighborhood. By pivoting to Asia, the Emirates is seeking strategic depth that the West simply cannot provide in the current climate. Why the UAE’s Exit from OPEC Was a Bold Power Move The decision to leav...

Unveiling the SHC's Surprising Decision: Restoration of Social Media Platforms Ordered Across Pakistan

The Sindh High Court (SHC) has recently issued a significant order, directing the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunications Authority (PTA) to restore social media platforms across Pakistan. This decision comes in response to a petition filed against the "unconstitutional" internet outages that have been affecting the country in recent days.

The order, issued by a bench headed by SHC Chief Justice Aqeel Ahmed Abbasi, specifically mentions the restoration of services for various social media platforms, including X (formerly known as Twitter). These platforms have been inaccessible to users in Pakistan following reports of internet disruptions and outages.

The court has also summoned a report from the PTA regarding the suspension of internet services on the day of the elections. This move highlights the court's concern over the impact of these disruptions on the democratic process and the freedom of expression.

The decision by the SHC reflects the importance of safeguarding the rights of individuals to access and utilize social media platforms for communication and expression. Social media has become an integral part of modern society, providing a platform for people to connect, share information, and express their opinions.

The recent disruptions in social media services in Pakistan have drawn attention from various stakeholders, including internet watchdog groups. Organizations like NetBlocks, which monitor internet accessibility, have reported a national-scale disruption of X in Pakistan. These disruptions were triggered by widespread protests related to alleged vote rigging during the general elections.

It is worth noting that the SHC's order emphasizes the need for transparency and accountability. The court has directed the federal government and the PTA to ensure the restoration of social media platforms in compliance with Pakistan's laws and regulations. This indicates the court's commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting citizens' rights to access information and express their views.

The restoration of social media platforms is not only crucial for individuals' ability to communicate and share information but also for the overall development and progress of the country. Social media plays a significant role in promoting transparency, facilitating public discourse, and fostering a sense of community. By restoring these platforms, the government can enable citizens to participate actively in social, political, and economic discussions.

As the process of restoring social media platforms unfolds, it is essential for all stakeholders, including the government, the PTA, and internet service providers, to work together to ensure a smooth and seamless transition. This will help minimize any further disruption and allow individuals to regain access to these essential communication tools.

The SHC's order to restore social media platforms across Pakistan is a significant step towards upholding citizens' rights and promoting a vibrant and inclusive digital society. It reaffirms the importance of freedom of expression, access to information, and the role of social media in facilitating democratic participation. As the platforms are gradually restored, individuals can once again engage, connect, and contribute to the diverse conversations that shape our society.

In a recent development, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) clarified to the Lahore High Court that there is no longer a ban on broadcasting former Prime Minister Imran Khan's speeches. This revelation came during the hearing of a petition filed by Imran, who had challenged Pemra's decision to prohibit satellite TV channels from airing his speeches and press talks. The initial ban was imposed swiftly after Imran criticized former army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa, accusing him of shielding current rulers in alleged corruption cases. Imran argued that Pemra's ban was fueled by vengeance, leading to a legal battle that spanned eight hearings. During the recent court session, Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza stressed that Pemra should refrain from pressuring TV channels on the concerns raised by the petitioner. Surprisingly, Pemra's counsel, Haroon Duggal, stated unequivocally that there is no existing ban on broadcasting Imran Khan's speeches. This reso...
