The caretaker government headed by Hamza Shehbaz has approved another increase in petrol prices effective from today. According to a notification issued late last night, the per litre price of petrol has been raised by Rs2.73 to Rs275.62.
The price of high-speed diesel (HSD) saw a bigger jump of Rs8.37, taking it to Rs287.33 per litre. There was no change announced in the prices of kerosene oil and light diesel oil.
The new prices have been notified on the recommendation of the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) and are aimed at passing on the impact of rising international oil rates to consumers. Officials said petrol prices globally had risen by about $1.20 per barrel over the last two weeks, while HSD became costlier by $3.5 per barrel.
However, the local currency saw some appreciation against the dollar, mitigating part of the impact. Exchange rate gain of around 40 paisas limited the increase. But premium paid on securing oil cargoes in the international market went up marginally.
The latest price revision underscores the caretaker government's commitment to adhere to the terms agreed with the IMF. Pakistan has set an ambitious target of collecting Rs869 billion in petroleum development levy this year to meet budgeted IMF revenues. It has already mopped up Rs475 billion in the first half of this fiscal year.
With prices already at record highs andtaxes accounting for over 30% of the retail rate, the latest increase is expected to put additional burden on consumers and fuel inflation. It remains to be seen if rising fuel costs along with inflation become a political issue in the upcoming general election.
