PTI Candidate Withdraws in Favor of PPP, Prompting Show-Cause Notice

In a surprising turn of events, Senator Saifullah Abro, associated with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, has withdrawn from the upcoming elections in NA-194 constituency to support Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, the Chairman of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). The PTI has issued a show-cause notice to Abro, questioning his decision and accusing him of violating party discipline.

This development follows the recent Supreme Court ruling upholding the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision to revoke the PTI’s electoral symbol, the ‘bat,’ and declaring the party’s intra-party polls as “unconstitutional.” As a result, the PTI has fielded its leaders as independent candidates, each with different electoral symbols.

Abro’s decision to switch parties came after a meeting with Bilawal in Lahore, as confirmed by Abro himself on a social media platform. He expressed his withdrawal from the race in favor of Bilawal and stated that he aimed to challenge the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) party.

Bilawal expressed gratitude for Abro’s support and urged PTI workers across the country to vote for the PPP’s arrow symbol on February 8. He emphasized the need for strategic voting to prevent the PML-N from gaining power again, suggesting that wasting votes on independent candidates would indirectly support the PML-N.

In response to Abro’s decision, the PTI issued a show-cause notice, citing his violation of party discipline as an elected senator and as a candidate for the general elections. Abro has been given three days to provide a written response, failing which further action will be taken according to party rules.

Bilawal’s appeal to political workers from all parties to vote smartly indicates his aspiration for a surprising outcome on Election Day. He encouraged voters to find their constituencies and polling booths by sending their NIC number via SMS and to visit the Election Commission of Pakistan’s website for candidate information.
