Why Social Media Platforms Is Facing Disruption In Pakistan?

In recent news, Pakistan has experienced a nationwide disruption in social media platforms, as reported by internet monitor Netblocks. This disruption, which affected platforms like X, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube, occurred just before a virtual rally organized by the PTI.

Users in cities like Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad faced difficulties accessing social media platforms, while others complained about slow internet services. This disruption has raised concerns about the freedom of expression and access to information in the country.

This is not the first time such incidents have occurred in Pakistan. In May, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed the suspension of mobile broadband across the country on the interior ministry’s instructions. This suspension coincided with the arrest of PTI chief Imran Khan, and access to Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube was also restricted.

The impact of such disruptions goes beyond inconvenience; it raises questions about the right to freedom of expression, access to information, and the role of social media in democratic societies. Social media platforms have become vital platforms for communication, sharing information, and expressing diverse opinions. Disruptions like these hinder these fundamental rights and limit the ability of individuals to engage in public discourse.

It is crucial to safeguard the principles of freedom of expression and ensure that access to information remains unrestricted. Internet shutdowns and disruptions should not be used as tools to stifle dissent or control the flow of information. Governments should prioritize open dialogue, transparency, and respect for human rights, even in the face of political rallies or sensitive situations.

In conclusion, the disruption of social media platforms in Pakistan raises concerns about the state of freedom of expression and access to information. Governments need to prioritize the principles of democracy, transparency, and respect for human rights, ensuring that internet shutdowns and disruptions do not become a concerning trend in the future.
