Is Trump’s Two-Week Timeline for Ending the Iran War Realistic?

The latest declarations from the White House have sent shockwaves through global markets, as President Donald Trump suggests the U.S. could wind down its military campaign against Iran within two to three weeks. However, as domestic petrol prices climb past $4 a gallon and the Strait of Hormuz remains a volatile chokepoint, many are questioning if this mission accomplished narrative is premature. The reality on the ground characterized by a lack of formal negotiations and a mowing the lawn military strategy suggests that ending this conflict will be far more complex than a simple withdrawal. The Stone Age Strategy: Defining the U.S. Military Objective President Trump has pivoted from seeking a diplomatic grand bargain to a strategy of pure attrition. By stating that a deal is no longer necessary, he has redefined success as the degradation of Iran’s capabilities to the point of being put into the Stone Ages. This shift signals an Israelization of American war aims, where the goal is n...

PM Shehbaz Sharif Dissolves National Assembly, Sets Stage for General Elections

In a significant political development, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced the dissolution of the National Assembly on August 9, three days before its scheduled term end. The decision was revealed during a dinner reception hosted in honor of the ruling allies at the Prime Minister's House. As per constitutional provisions, this early dissolution means that general elections will be held within 90 days.

During the reception, the PM highlighted the achievements of the coalition government, countering criticism and addressing concerns over his perceived alignment with the establishment. He informed the attendees that consultations within the ruling PML-N had been finalized, and discussions with allies on the caretaker set-up would commence on Friday, a process expected to take at least three days.

The formation of a caretaker government is a crucial step preceding the elections, and it plays a pivotal role in ensuring a smooth and impartial transition of power. To this end, the Prime Minister is engaging in discussions with allies to select competent and neutral individuals for the caretaker positions.

In his speech, PM Shehbaz touted the economic achievements of the coalition government, emphasizing a 13 percent increase in revenue collection over 15 months. He also proudly noted that more than 1.3 million new taxpayers were added to the tax net, indicating a positive trend towards broadening the tax base.

However, the claim regarding the power sector recoveries should be considered alongside the 18 percent increase in circular debt, amounting to Rs393 billion in the past 11 months. The circular debt remains a persistent challenge for the government, requiring further attention and strategic planning.

The Prime Minister also highlighted significant progress in the IT sector, reporting a substantial increase in IT exports, reaching $2.6 billion during the last fiscal year. This growth in the IT industry bodes well for Pakistan's economic future, as it opens up new avenues for revenue generation and job creation.

As the political landscape unfolds with the dissolution of the National Assembly, Pakistanis eagerly await the upcoming general elections. The caretaker government's selection and its subsequent performance in overseeing the electoral process will be closely watched by citizens and stakeholders alike.

The elections present an opportunity for the nation to exercise its democratic right and shape the future course of the country. As political parties gear up for the electoral contest, it is vital for all stakeholders to maintain a peaceful and respectful environment, ensuring free and fair elections.

The success of any democratic process lies in the active participation of the people, the adherence to electoral laws, and the acceptance of the election results. Citizens' engagement in the electoral process should go beyond voting, encompassing responsible and informed decision-making.

As the nation enters a crucial phase, it is essential to remain vigilant against any attempts to disrupt the democratic process and uphold the principles of democracy, transparency, and accountability. The collective efforts of political leaders, parties, and citizens will determine the course of Pakistan's democratic journey.

In a recent development, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) clarified to the Lahore High Court that there is no longer a ban on broadcasting former Prime Minister Imran Khan's speeches. During the recent court session, Justice Shams Mehmood Mirza stressed that Pemra should refrain from pressuring TV channels on the concerns raised by the petitioner. Surprisingly, Pemra's counsel, Haroon Duggal, stated unequivocally that there is no existing ban on broadcasting Imran Khan's speeches. This reso...
