Israel’s interception of Gaza flotilla draws global ire as Pakistan demands release of detained activists

Pakistan and several other  countries  on Thursday condemned Israel’s “dastardly attack” on the  Global Sumud Flotilla  (GSF) after its forces intercepted the flotilla heading to break Israel’s siege of Gaza and deliver aid. Israeli forces  began intercepting  the flotilla’s latest bid to reach Gaza late last night, the fleet said. Israel has so far intercepted 39 boats with foreign activists on board to Gaza, leaving only one vessel still sailing towards the Palestinian enclave, the flotilla organisers said today. The 45-vessel flotilla, with activists and politicians including  Greta Thunberg  on board, left Spain last month to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza, where the United Nations has warned of famine. Former Pakistani senator  Mushtaq Ahmad Khan  was also on board. Hours after Tel Aviv’s move drew global condemnation, Israeli foreign ministry posted on X that all on board the flotilla were safe would be “deported to Europe”...

Imran Khan Denies PTI Involvement in Attacks, Calls for Independent Inquiry

In a recent address following his release, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan vehemently denied any involvement of his party workers in the attacks on military installations during the violent protests that erupted across the country. Khan called for an independent inquiry to uncover the truth behind the incidents.

The protests unfolded after Khan's arrest on May 9, 2023, which led to widespread unrest and chaos. However, the PTI chairman emphasized that it was not his party but those who sought to evade accountability and disrupt the elections that were responsible for creating an atmosphere of turmoil.

During the days-long protests, several military installations, including the Lahore Corps Commander House and the General Headquarters (GHQ), were targeted by the agitated demonstrators. The resulting violence claimed the lives of at least 10 people and left numerous others injured. Additionally, internet services remained suspended across the country for over 72 hours.

In response to the attacks on army installations, the military described the events of May 9 as a dark chapter in the nation's history. However, Khan maintained that it was crucial to conduct an independent inquiry to establish the truth and determine the actual perpetrators behind the violent acts.

Addressing the nation via video link, Khan placed the blame on Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) supremo Nawaz Sharif for attacking the judiciary, accusing him of dismantling the judicial system. The PTI chairman emphasized the need for accountability and stressed that those who evade it only seek to create unrest and chaos in the country.

The call for an independent inquiry and the denial of PTI's involvement in the attacks shed light on the complex and tense political landscape in Pakistan. As the nation seeks stability and progress, it is imperative to uncover the truth behind such incidents and ensure justice prevails.
